"The Last Samurai"

The time was 19th century, the Mejii period; the place, Japan. Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) is sent to Japan to help quash a Samurai rebellion, a rebellion that seeks to preserve the old ways of Japan, against the influx of Western civilization (and quite important in this case, western armaments). One big problem though; filming was due to begin in 10 weeks and no one could find enough authentic baskets from that period. What are you going to do? You call on Baskets of Cambodia!, a company that specializes in authentic basket craft of the highest quality. Together with the help of Warner Brothers who provided full size pictures of collector's baskets, we put together museum quality replicas of over 600 baskets all made in the traditional way of that Japanese period. (We didn't want to anger the Samurai either.) Within two weeks we had procured the best basket makers in Cambodia who worked enthusiastically on many challenging designs.

The result, "The Last Samurai" is currently showing throughout the world, and we expect the set design to garner much attention at the upcoming academy awards. All of us at "Baskets of Cambodia! just saw the picture, and were thrilled by such a great production with such an honorable story. It is big screen entertainment at its best. Tom Cruise does a great job. It is a great and moving story, well told, and the scenery and camera work is profoundly beautiful and inspiring.

These beautiful bamboo weave baskets being from a distant time and place, are one of a kind. All hand made and crafted, these truely are works of art. They will be available for orders at upcoming trade shows this winter or you may click here to see them beforehand.

Everyone at Baskets of Cambodia! is truly proud to have been involved in such an excellent production. It was also a joy to work with the very professional people at Warner Bros and we thank them for giving us the opportunity to show them what we could do.

Fishing for dinner? No. Just fishing for fun before sitting down to a communally cooked meal. This is just part of the production team for the movie "The Last Samurai". We had a wonderful meal on the Great Tonle Sap (a huge lake in central Cambodia). After eating, the entire crew took two boats out into the lake for swimming, relaxing, and sight-seeing. And at the end of the day, everyone climbed the local mountain on the edge of the lake, Phnom Krom, where they gave thanks at the Buddhist temple sitting on top. We were all exhausted as we came back down the mountain, further rewarded by a beautiful sunset and the expanse of views stretching out across the lake.
